I went to Cyprus!!!

We have just got back from Cyprus!! (Monday actually). It was incredible...the shadow had a few days off School so we took off outta here into cooler climates. The weather was perfect!! Absolutely amazing.
The Shadow, husband and I watched magical purple-skied sunrises, admired and made wishes with the glorious full blue moon, ran riot after dinner along Larnaca beach, got locked into public toilets...twice....partied in Ayia Napa (does drinking coffee in the afternoon count?) and I watched in awe of my little human as he got so excited he could barely breathe at a water park. I was proud of him for conquering some of his fears...I.e whooshing down a big flume and squeeling to go faster!
It was fabulous...did I stay off the sugar? Nope. How about gluten? Whoopsie...I had all the things I shouldn't have had. But I did eat lots of salad!! I was a bit like 'argh' at first but then I thought 'f' it...I shall deal with it when I get home. And I did. Yesterday I was totally groggy but today I feel ok....so there...no regrets just happy memories of an awesome time away with my family...eat up!!

Day 22....

I have made it past the 3 week mark!!

To celebrate my 3 weeks of no sugar I was delighted with my first lot of sugar cravings...can you believe that?! A few times throughout the day I had moments where I felt weak. It was unusual as I haven't had any cravings until yesterday!! I got through it and didnt touch da sweet stuff.

I did however have some gluten free oats yesterday. I made sweet potato and mushroom burgers. The recipe asked for oats and my first attempts WITHOUT the oats would not bind together and would break and fall apart even after I had cooked them....so I used oats and they came out much better, although in my opinion they tasted better without the oats! Did it contribute to cravings? I dont think so, but I was super bloated last night.

This morning, I heated some left over pancakes for my shadow, I cannot lie...the smell!!! Omg...it was divine!! I just kept saying, 'these smell so delicious'  neither the shadow or husband got what I was talking about. I think my sense of smell has changed!

I still had some cravings today but I keep reminding myself of how awful I felt only a few weeks ago and how far I have come in the last 3 weeks....I feel a bit antisocial as I have already turned down 3 takeaways, a couple of vanilla soya lattes and lots of sweet feedings from my shadow...but right now this is important to me!

The 16th day

I am shocked to see that I haven't updated in a week. I had quite a busy week as I am currently volunteering at the shadows School twice a week, plus I dealt with a flood in our villa and a vomiting child....and a husband that was away most of the week. It can get busy and quite full on. I spent most mornings preparing food for myself and that can  take up quite a bit of my time too (totally worth it), so by Friday (the first day of the weekend here) I was ready for a rest!
I was feeling good though, and avoiding sugar, I believe, gave me the energy to deal with the week. The afternoon slumps are pretty much gone and the foggy brain has improved. I admit, Friday, was a bit of 'drag my feet day'  even though we all went for a little bike ride in the morning which was lurrrrvvvvellly.
I also went out with friends on Friday night. I had 2 glasses of red wine, felt quite pissed!! Oopsie....but had a fabulous, sweaty night dancing with friends out in the desert heat.
Saturday, although gasping for water all day, I woke to a rank tasting mouth that lasted all day and craved sugar a little bit too....Lesson learnt. I dont particularly need to drink to have a good time, but I did fancy a tipple that night...

So I am continuing and enjoying the journey. It is a relief to have some food addiction freeness and not be continuously thinking about what sugary substance is lingering in my cupboards in the evening for me to devour. The fat intake is still high and I believe that this has contributed to the sugar relief. I hope I have found a balance. I have still not eaten fruit (except grapes in wine heheh) to be honest I am a little afriad to taste anything sugary as I don't want to go back to the sugary 'mess' that I was only a few short weeks ago...

Is it really day 9?

Wowers. Day 9! No fruit, no refined sugar, no soy and day 7 of no grains!!

Why no soy? I am on the fence with the pros and cons of soy. I have read good and bad stuff about it...and having had it for 12 years, why not see what happens if I eliminate it?  Secondly I drink an almost daily soya latte from a coffee shop, I definitely don't want the dairy version, another plant milk alternative is not available so I just sluurped away. But with cutting out the sugar, I assumed the soya milk would be loaded with the stuff so thought 'what the heck' I'll drink tea instead!!

So what do I eat!?? I would say I am eating a lot of plants! A lot!! I have found some great alternatives....spiralising courgette is one idea for a pasta/spaghetti, cauliflower rice is another and more recently I have learnt about the burger alternitive using one of those giant flat mushrooms...what are they called???!!
For example, tonights dinner is a bolognaise, made with a mushroom mince, (mushroom, carrot, garlic and onion, finely chopped in a food processor or blender) with a tomato salsa and cauliflower rice (sautéed with garlic and kidney beans.) Yummmmmy!! Ok, I admit, it can be a bit time consuming but making bulk and eating it the next day for lunch makes it worth it. I also like that I know what I am putting into my body and being more aware of the rubbish that is out there. AND I actually do really love to cook.

How am I feeling? I have been on a bit of a rollercoaster of emotionas this weekend and some of my unpublished posts may just remain unpublished. It's been a tough weekend and am wondering if, the holistic therapist in me, thinks this is a type of body healing process of all the foods I have eliminated. If it is, then I didn't handle it very well and should have just gone on a deserted island until I was feeling myself again. Today I am feeling much better.
Physically though I feel good and the afternoon slumps have actually kinda gone. And I dont feel so foggy headed like I used too :-D

Food Stuff

Cauliflower rice...see??? Looks just like rice. Easy peasy to prepare too. Either grate or food process a cauliflower head. It makes loads, this bowlful came from half a small cauliflower head.

Dried red kidney beans becoming undry!!

Day 6. Snappy Happy

I am in awe of myself...I cannot believe I have got this far!!

I said in yesterdays post that I was feeling amazing and I truly am, but I am also a little 'snappy' too, which I also mentioned in yesterdays post. This I don't particularly like...

This morning I woke a little groggy. Possibly because I exercised last night and then couldn't get to sleep an hour or so after exercising. I must have slept well though because I woke to a human in my bed and wondered at what point in the night had this little person crept into my bed.

I feel good though. Did I mention that I have cut out grains too? It kinda happened accidentally, eating more plant based foods. The first two days I had wheat in my veggie sausages so I suppose this is day 4 of no grains. I am not even eating the gluten free kind. In my head, I figured I wanted no temptation, if I had grains, I believe it may lead on to a sugar splurge/cravings. I have always wondered about grains though, I have a skin problem known as keratosis polaris...or 'chicken skin' (mermaid skin) and I have been reading that it could be caused by a sensitivity to gluten and it's ability to stop the body from absorbing omega 3. I have stopped eating gluten in the past, but never noticed much difference in my skin condition, maybe because I wasnt paying much attention. But today, it feels as though the skin on my upper arms are much softer and certainly less 'scaly' (I used to say I was a mermaid in my past life...) could it be.....so more motivation to keep going.

I am suprised at my motivation to eliminate fruit for as long as I have...I don't particularly miss it either. I was however cutting up strawberries for the shadow yesterday and o my....they smelt soooooooooooooooo sweeeeeeeeet!! Has my nasal buds changed too? Is that possible? Thoughts?

Btw...I had an amazing curry-like-dinner last night made from sweet potatoes and lentils, I made cauliflower rice and softened it in a pan with water and garlic...o my..it was amzing. I should have taken a picture but I scoffed it down...sorryyyy

I am currently un-drying?? Is that even a word? red kidney beans. I soaked them overnight and now have put them in the slow cooker for 8 hours. I have never done this before so wish me luck. Dried beans/lentils are so cheap I don't know why I haven't done this before. I keep buying the canned versions though and although thats fine, BPA or whatever it is, from the can is not. Also, I recently nearly vommited on a funky tasting red kidney bean. It left me questioning the health of a canned bean!! Eek....

Day 5- Feeling wonderful

Reached day 5...yay go me!

After a bit of a tense morning with my shadow, and him bringing it to my attention, we played a game of 'I love you because.'...it helped A LOT! Sometimes I wonder who is the adult...me or him....

I think playing the game helped reset my grumpy mindset and put me in a good mood. I watched his assembly, did a 20 minute ride on the turbo trainer and went for coffee..or in my case rooibos tea with a friend. I am feeling so good today! So happy, no brain fog, positive and present!! It is interesting to me and I sincerely hope it continues to just get better...

I still have acheyness, a bit of anxiousness and I've had some mouth issues too, a minor metallic taste in the mouth and my teeth? Gums? hurt. I cant quite articulate the feeling but I am aware that its there. I am thinking it is linked to the achey body somehow....

So far though, so good and I am so proud of myself with how far I have come.

No cravings, which has made it so much easier!!

Day 3 some more...

O my goodness...I feel well but ill all at the same time...I just feel I need to sleep!! I have a dull ache in my head, I feel like I have anxiety, have restless body (not just legs...arms too), and on/off pain in my abdomen. I still feel like my energy is low but stable, albeit a bit tense. O the joys.

Let me tell you, I have lived on sugar for like forever. I think I ate sugar every.single.day since childhood. I was told to avoid it back in my weight training days but it still crept in (daily soya latte anyone?!!) Is it any wonder I feel like shiiiite?!!! My body totally is rebelling today...what a traitor!! I have been feeding it lots of goodness, green veg, beans, legumes, sweet potato, nuts etc....but it wants da sweeet stuff!! Noooooooo....roll on bedtime and day 4!

Ps. I managed some exercise today too.

Day 3

So I have reached day 3!! Hurrah....yesterday was ok. I didnt experience any cravings at all, but I was hungry ALLLLL day...nothing took away my appetite and I just ate to try and feel satisfied. I am hoping this will work itself out....otherwise I expect to be quite a few pounds heavier!

I also felt quite tired but noticed that I didnt feel like I had any 'ups then downs'....I felt consistent, although quite 'low,' again I am hoping that is temporary and I will come out the other side in a few days. I tried to do some yoga too but felt so weak that I cut it short after 15minutes.

I didn't sleep much at all last night. I had restless legs again, and the shadow had me up quite a lot in the night. I have a feeling today will be more challenging due to 'real' tiredness, rather then 'withdrawal' tiredness..but maybe it is all in the mind? If I live by that then maybe I will tell my body to have cravings. Perhaps I should alter the thought pattern....'I feel good, I have energy'
What are your thoughts on changing the mindset? Has It worked for you?

Sugar free update -Day 1/2

Ok...I admit. I have been totally rubbish. Rubbish at blogging, and rubbish with my own promise of sugar freeness. Life gets in the way and my procrastination too. Social media etc is a brilliant tool but people get too addicted living their own life through it rather then looking up and living life for just how it is...I dont want to be the former and so I find it easy to put down my phone and just 'do life'. I am also bringing up a son and each phase in his little life presents challenges and amazing moments that I would miss if the eyes were focused on the white screen, I want to saviour each moment, so everything else takes a back seat...sorry, not that sorry, about that.

Anyhow, I feel it is time for an update...so the sugar freeness didnt happen....I kinda put it to the back of my brain and forgot about it. There were moments where I didnt eat much of it for sure. But other times I would scoff it down without a thought for what task I had set myself.
The last few days, I have eaten out a lot, eaten the sweet stuff, enjoyed the sweet stuff too. But I started thinking about how much of it I was eating and the impact it had on me once I'd had a taste. It was never JUST a taste. It was a downward spiral of wanting more and more and more and more...until I felt miserable. After speaking with a friend who doesnt eat sugar, I was feeling inspired, motivated and actually ready to tackle this...something I dont think I was after christmas, they were just words in my head at what I needed to do but hadnt actually absorbed.
So after a barbeque, cake, raw balls and red wine...I decided enough. I read about detox and sugar withdrawal symptoms and so feel slightly better prepared.  This time, I have decided to cut out fruit for the first few days to see if it helps tackle sugar craving and to 'reset' the tastebuds.

Yesterday was day 1. I was feeling pretty tired for most of the day. I couldn't decide if it was due to having a few late nights or because my body mainly runs on sugar..and today it wasn't. Perhaps it was a bit of both. By the end of the day though, I was exhausted, bloated, with a sore throat and restless legs. I slept okish but had some weird dreams that felt as though I was awake.

Today is the beginning of day 2. I still feel quite tired and woke up groggy. I feel like doing some yoga today, for the first time in forever. I have been doing quite a bit of HIIT training, but not today, it is like my body is telling me to take it easy and I am ok with that. I am not having cravings, but my goal is to eat enough (and eat lots of greens) to ensure that I am never hungry.
My breakfast has been some CoYo. Which is a coconut yogurt alternative. There is no sugar in it. It is yummy and offers a small amount of sweetness too. I made up a salad for lunch with chickpeas and soya sausage and dinner last night was homemade butternut squash chips with brocoli, sprouts and more salad/sausage. It will be a similar set up today....I hope I can remain strong. From about 1 to 5pm I usually have a major crash in energy and am hoping that doesnt make me reach for the sugar......

Illness

Day 2 and the Shadow woke up vomiting this morning, which came as a complete suprise to me. It was a rough night with sleep from both of us too so perhaps he is just super tired and hasn't fully recovered from the flying yet.
A successful day. I didnt even think about sugar but am wondering if this is the calm before the storm as it is really only the beginning!! I am expecting many challenges...travel being one of them and parties being another....I am hoping daily blogging will help keep me focused, even if it just a few lines a day.

Flying...

In my last post, I said I am going sugar free for a year. To clarify, I mean artificial sugar free...I will eat fruit in abundance!

Me and the shadow (my son) flew back to Doha yesterday. It was a terribly long day as we were on the ground at Heathrow for just over 5 hours due to a fault with the plane that needed fixing. *A note to moany passengers...'I am sorry that the long wait may have inconvenienced your transfer to your final destination...it is a pain, I get that. But seriously...would you prefer to divert? Fly in a potentially unsafe vessel? I would rather wait 5 hours thank you!'
Anyway, moving on...we got home after midnight. I had a headache...we opened gifts at 1am in the morning as the shadow was hyper! It was fun...a bit exhausting.
So now the sugar artifical freeness starts!! Gulp.......this makes me nervous...

Sugar free for a year

I have decided that I am going sugar free for a year. I have posted before about my utter reliance on sugar and I am an all or nothing type of girl. I am so sick of having masses amount of sugar in my diet and being unable to control my desire to have it. So I am challenging myself to no sugar for a year. I will document it, hopefully daily, to keep me going....and it starts, not on New Years Day...no....it starts when my feet touch down in Doha tomorrow evening.....o boy!

Week 2...

So...I've completed week 1 and 2 of the 28 day detox. Week 1 went really well but the beginning of week 2 was challenging and here is why...
The new detox week starts on Saturdays, I had a social event on the Friday night, the end of week one. On the elimination list was alcohol. This I did not eliminate on week one, so figured I was good to go for the Friday night party of fun. I was however, determined that this was going to be a little test for me to limit the amount of alcohol I drank. I was even going to avoid my usual tipple of vodka and diet coke (which is ironic as I don't even like fizzy drinks but drink it as I once read ions ago that this combibation was the lowest calorie beverage and that is why I drink it!!! Insane)
Did I achieve this? YES I DID!! In total I had 4 drinks spread out between 8pm and 2am. I was impressed with myself especially as it was free drinks at the bar we went to!!
The next day I was hangover free, but I was in total bad carb city...having jam on toast for breakfast...it all went down hill from there until about Monday morning when I decided that I needed to sort myself out, especially as the tummy problems and groggy tiredness was creeping back in.
So since Monday, I have been eliminating all things from the list! ! I am still having about one cup of coffee a day as by mid afternoon I am getting a withdrawal headache...green tea isn't even stopping that at the moment. With my husband being out of the house a lot at the moment, and me chasing after a 2 year old,  I don't have time to deal with the withdrawal just yet. But I shall get there...soon.
In preparation for week 3's smoothie and juice fast (which started today) I was having a smoothie for breakfast, juicing up to 10 oranges, 4 carrots, 1 apple and 1 cucumber and drinking that for lunch and having a major green salad with sweet potato at night. I would then possibly have another juice before bedtime.
I'm feeling great!! I have better mental clarity,  and I feel like I'm not holding onto any major water weight. So less puffy or something..
I haven't done any exercise as I said earlier, my husbands out a lot working or working on his project, which I support fully,  but I'm a single parent right now with no outside help. ..so for now its just me and ma boy...but thats ok I'm still 5lbs lighter (although weight loss wasnt my main goal here,  my health is more important. ..it came as a pleasant suprise)
Carrot and Orange juice, banana smoothie (one for me and one for the lil dude)

Time to Detox!!

Hey, hey!!

So, I managed to spend most of the Middle Eastern Summer away! Yippee! I have done the odd summer here in Qatar, and it is not too much of a problem, the main benefit are the roads being clear and meeting people you wouldn't normally meet. However this year, I decided to get out!! I was fortunate to spend 2 weeks in Northern Cyprus and then about 4 weeks in my home country! I hadn't seen my family and friends for almost a year (some, over a year!) and I miss them all dearly (even the ones I did not manage to see)

However, everything, healthy eating wise, slipped over the 6 weeks, and my jeans got tighter. I had planned ahead. I packed my handheld blender, I brought foods that were my lifeline, which included dates and quinoa, I shopped at the destinations and stocked up on fresh fruit and veg. I even packed some homemade carrot cake balls, grapes and apples for the plane journey.

I was doing OK in Cyprus, I managed to get out and do a few runs, I swam lengths in the pool, I blended, I froze and I tried to order a salad whenever we went out to eat...my downfall?? Chips and alcohol. I flew back to Doha for 24 hours before my trip to the UK. I was bloated, and a couple of Kilos heavier...bleugh!!

Then 4 weeks in the UK, travelling from one place to another, I was having CEREAL!!! for breakfast and no raw foods at all. It was getting me down, so I started to have a smoothie for my breakfast, I did a few runs, and ate my mums yummy stew...but after having a fab time in the UK, not really paying much attention to my diet, I came back to Doha pretty sick. I was exhausted!! Then one night after eating a heavy cooked meal, I woke to a hideous pain in my stomach, I was dizzy, light headed, the room was spinning (no, I hadn't been drinking) and I ended up being sick a couple of times. The next day was spent in bed. But then after that, I was getting daily headaches, I was STILL exhausted, I had (and still haven't) no motivation for exercise, I was getting cramps in my stomach after eating, I was puffy and I was getting joint ache too, mainly in my wrists. I was concerned for my health, as this was all too familiar to me. I was eating cooked food everyday, they were pretty healthy actually, but was also eating quite a bit of wheat and sugar.

I was just hanging in there really as I was starting a 28 day Clean and Lean Detox programme in a few days time! I'm no major believer in detox's really, but after reading the info a few months ago, I saw it as an elimination programme, that seemed easy enough to stick to as it wasn't about major restriction (I HEART FOOD) so, here's the lowdown...

Week One- Eliminate 3 foods  (a list is given)  I chose Caffeine (o yes, even the coffee had made its way back in my diet...dammit!!) sugar and wheat. Also, introduce green smoothies into your day

Week Two- Eliminate ALL the foods from the list. Keep including green smoothies into your day

Week Three - Eliminate all foods from the list AND do a juice and smoothie fast

Week Four - Introduce the foods back into your diet, one day at a time and report how you feel.

Simples in my opinion.

Anyway, I started on Saturday, feeling pretty rubbish. BUT......... 24 hours later, I was a new woman. I ate 95% RAW on the first day, having a smoothie for breakfast and a huuuge green salad for dinner.
I woke up Sunday and I wasn't groggy, I had a bit of energy!! Then throughout the day, I noticed my joint pain, my wrists, didn't hurt anymore, and they haven't done since!! 48 hours and I have had no more stomach cramps and no more headaches!! I feel sooo much better.

I know, hard to believe right?!! I have no explanation of this, either I was run down, and I coincidentally got better, OR the foods are making my body thrive!!

I'm not sure if I want to reintroduce the foods (week 4) to be honest, I think this HAS to be a way of life for me.

DIY Dehydrating

Ok, so it's taken me a while to get into the mindset of yummy, whole food eating again. I don't think I was doing too bad, but I just couldn't cut the bread and there were a few events where cupcakes were a must, me, mainly making them, and having to taste test at every possible moment....I was just loving all that sugar, meanwhile my ass wasn't!

So my husband does a big food shop and brought home some goodies. The two things I had my eye on was the HUUUUGE watermelon and the Super Raw Carrot Cake Cookies.

OOOOO!!

I was pretty impressed with my husbands efforts, especially as the price had me almost chocking on my cup of green tea!! Anyway, I opened them up and devoured a serving!! Well Done Husband!!

It took me a few days to get through the bag, it wasn't like the normal bag of crisps or cookies, which would leave me wanting more. A few from the bag was enough and satisfied me! YAY

But I couldn't get past the price, and reckoned I could recreate this, especially as the ingredients were 5 simple things, all of which were stocked in my cupboard/fridge! So off I went into the kitchen to mix something up!

Here is what I did-

1 Cup Shredded coconut
1 Cup Sesame seeds (I did not sprout these)
1 Medium Carrot- peeled and grated
20 Dates (I used Khalas, these are smaller then Medjool)
Nutmeg

Cover the dates at room temperature water for 5 minutes ( I find them easier to pit and blend if soaked) meanwhile, peel and grate the carrot then measure out the coconut and sesame seeds into a bowl and mix together.
Pit the dates and add to a food processor and blend until the dates loosen up a bit and are chopped (they will probably clump together and roll into a bowl- thats fine) add the carrot until mixed well. I used real nutmeg so cracked open the shell and grated the seed part into my mix, I used about half the seed (but I looove Nutmeg) I then poured in bit by bit the mixed coconut and sesame seed, and used until I thought I had reached the correct consistency.*

It looked like this!
I was very impressed at how alike they tasted to the shop bought one!! :) Go me...
I rolled the mix into balls,  flattened and placed on a baking tray.

Ready for the Dehydrating process to start!
I used half the mix to dehydrate and the rest I rolled into balls and put them in the fridge (they weren't there long..)

I've never dehydrated before, I have read in the past that you can use your oven for this purpose although most serious dehydratists (is that even a word?) buy a Dehydrator.
So why Dehydrate? And What is it? Well its a process that involves 'dehydrating' a food instead of 'cooking," in order to retain all of its beautiful enzymes that cooking kills.  So after doing a bit of research, it seems the temperature for dehydrating is about 105 Degrees Fahrenheit.

I'm currently using my oven, on the lowest setting and using a thermometer in the oven to help keep on track. I seem to be fluctuating between 100 and 120 degrees fahrenheit, and it seems the more air flow you have the better. I dont have a fan assisted oven, so have left the door open a few times to see if that helps...it's a bit of an experiment as it is the first time I've ever done this, they are still in the oven after being in there for 10 hours already!! YES thats right, I forgot to mention that Dehydrating is a lengthy process!! I'll let you know how it goes!!

xx

*Note -I measured what I had left of the coconut and sesame mix and had just under a cup, so the measurement above is a little wrong (remember approximation girl here!!)  I think I would try half a cup of each plus a little extra next time!

So far...

Ok, its been a few days! ! And my quest for better eating is going ok.  I have still not green smoothied yet but have managed a good ol banana and date icecream for breakfast everyday so far. I would happily live on this! I'm back using the spiraliser, which is proving a little life saver and have been spiralising beetroot and courgette.  I've been eating this with a big salad, I also made a potato salad the other day, vegan, no mayo, this worked great and tasted good too ( sweetcorn,  peas, spinach, jalapeƱos salt and a dash of olive oil) cutting out the artificial sugar is going well, but I think I need a fridge full of raw chocolate balls for whenever I get a craving. ..hmmm...thats actually a good idea. ..ok so I'm off now to do just that.
I shall leave you with a picture of my di net the other night...I had made the veggie burger myself...below are the Ingredients-
1 grated carrot
3 grated potatoes
2 cans of chick peas,  mashed
1 cup of sweetcorn
Salt and pepper to taste
Combine ingredients,  make into patties and pop them into a frying pan with a dash of olive oil...cook until done turning halfway
I'd just like to make a note that when I do these again I shall cook and mash the potato first, combine ingredients. ..I think they will hold together better that way!

May madness

Ok..so this is going to be short and sweet....
May came and went in a flash...I've been busy not really achieving a lot but busy busy with coffee mornings, birthday parties, play dates, more birthdays, swimming lessons,  music classes, the occasional gym session, yoga session and a quick getaway to Munich....phew...you get the gist.
Besides having some awesome vegan meals in Munich (more on that at a later date) I've lost my mojo...my diets all over the place and I'm carbed up on bread and crackers.  Ive had a couple of IBS moments, which were horrendous, so I know my body is in need of detox and I'm uber bloated and tired!
So tomorrow it starts. 21days more raw! Time for green juices, smoothies, salads and fruit, out goes sugar, bread and all other junk! I need my energy back!! I shall update on here as much as possible.

Wish me luck!! Xx

Blender Blunder!!

My beloved blender died a few days ago...r.i.p blender...it served me well for 2 full years, its just unfortunate that it was no longer able to keep up with the abuse that I threw at it. It was used daily, and in the beginning I would use it to make smoothies using soft fruits like blueberries and bananas. Towards the end of its life however, I was throwing in frozen bananas and other frozen fruit, I could hear the blender struggling until one day, on a sunny afternoon in Doha, the bottom of the blender split. It was the end. Im without a blender and have had to use a handheld device in  temporary replacement until we decide what to do. Hubby jokingly thinks I destroyed it on purpose in order to get a blender upgrade! Cheeky!! Especially as I recently went to a Thermomix demonstration, which, by the way, looks like an amazing piece of German equipment!! I have however heard amazinng stuff about the Vitamix. O what to do *sigh*

In other news... I have some sort of throat infection. Probably lovingly given to me by my little man. He's had conjunctivitis and an ear infection so we have been house bound for a few days. Anyway, not really wanting to load myself up on parecetamol, I decided to try and take a more natural route.  I've read many times that cinamon and honey in warm water is supposed to be good for the throat.  I have been replacing the honey for lemon, it tastes very pleasant. I've also been making fresh orange juice and watermelon smoothies, all of which give temporary relief. I'm hoping that this will fight the infection ASAP as we have little family getaway next week :-)

Spirulina

I woke up this morning to hear of the devastating news in Boston. Since having W, I often get emotional when hearing such terrible news, probably because once you become a parent there is a silent shift, all of a sudden your life becomes valuable, you have someone to live for. So since learning the impotance of life, I am often left with a heavy heart when others gets taken so needlessly!! And today was one of those days...
So to take my mind off the world news I distracted myself and thought I would try a new 'superfood' in my smoothie. Spirulina!! I have seen this food floating around in the raw food world, heck, even my mamma is using it in her smoothies and tells me how good it makes her feel!! So hubs brought me some back after a UK trip he had a few days ago.
So here is the low down..spirulina is a green blue algae formed mainly in open water ponds. It is what gives the pond that greeny colour. It is called spirulina as it grows in spirals. It is thought that it is so nutritious that man could live on only this and water. It contains all 8 amino acids, iron, zinc vitamin b12, copper, iodine and magnesium. If you are sensitive to iodine then it is advised to avoid this product. It is also a blood, liver and kidney purifier, hence the increased energy when you take this product! So you can understand why this is labelled a superfood.
My plan was to make a cacao and banana softserve with spirulina. And thats exactly what I did.
First of all, the product comes in a powder, I opened the packet and a plume of green dust came out of the packet and the smell was quite overwhelming...I decided it best to just put a small amount in the smoothie. ..half a teaspoon will do!! Wow...it was a very overpowering taste. Quite earthy...but the colour was amazing, such a beautifully bright green colour (before I added the cacao). However, tomorrow I will add less spirulina and take it slow, just until my taste buds get used to this new taste.

In other news. W came home from nursery having eaten all his breakfast and lunch!!  Wohoo...it's been a while since he's eaten everything and at home he has been refusing food, especially his porridge, so I shook up his food slightly (maybe he was sick of porridge). So for anyone stuck for ideas here is what I gave him-  for breakfast he had quinoa, mixed with soya yogurt, blueberries and coconut palm sugar.  For lunch he had avocado with a squeeze of lemon and little bit of salt sandwiches, nut free raw balls (the nursery is nut free) that cosisted of ground sunflower, pumpkin, flaxseed and goji berries, coconut flakes, cocao, raisins and coconut oil. He also had a small bag of dried fruit. To be honest I didnt expect him to eat the sandwiches!! But Wohoo...he did!!
And so to finish off my distraction day I decided to make more raw balls without using any oil!! And I did it!! I wanted a strong flavour...and I did that too!! Here is the recipe..
1 cup of raisins
1/4 cup ground nuts or seeds (I have been using linwoods mixed seeds and goji berries)
1/4 cup cacao
Knuckle of ginger (or as much as you like...this was my strong flavour that I wanted)
Nutmeg
Cinnamon
Mix the raisins well. Add all the other ingredients until well blended and then roll into balls. ..simples. ...
